The Fourth IDEM Convention, to take place in Palermo on 2-4 April 2014, will discuss these issues and focus on the state of the art of identity federations operating in Italy and abroad today.

The event is co-organised with the GARR-X Progress Workshop (31 March 31-2 April). Both events will be held in Italian.

The Fourth IDEM Convention opens by projecting the audience into the future. Interoperability is the challenge awaiting us the upcoming years. Digital identities provided in Research and Education sector should become interoperable with services offered by the government. Students, researchers, and citizens will all be enabled to easily manage their digital identities issued by different agencies, including the organizations where they study or work, and public offices. The interoperability made possible by the federated approach will also be beneficial in terms of the investments made in the e-government sector.

One area of easy collaboration between universities and local institutions, especially in metropolitan areas, is wifi access to the Internet. Success stories will be presented which will offer viable cooperation models and may stimulate new collaborations, also involving reference business partners. Thus, studying and testing interoperable solutions means helping to remove obstacles which still prevent organizations from participating in Identity Federations.

Thanks to the standardized access to resources ensured by digital identity, significant savings can be achieved in the field of cultural and artistic heritage, thus mobilizing resources to be invested in the creation of new services, which are necessary for the development and promotion of this important but often neglected sector.

After 4 years of IDEM Federation activity, there are many initiatives ongoing and many success stories to tell. The infrastructures of authentication and authorization are well established in the organizations. They allow to rationalize the user identity management, to offer more effective, easy-to-use services, opening new opportunities for initiating public-private partnerships.

In addition, thanks to the unified Identity management, organizations can demonstrate extensive guarantees in terms of security and privacy. Especially in an international perspective, this is a key strength of the federated approach, as interoperability implies agreeing on codes of conduct and on standardized and globally shared levels of assurance.
